Toronto's all-star forward Chris Bosh had surgery Wednesday to repair a facial fracture suffered when he took an elbow to the face from Cleveland's Antawn Jamison in a game on Tuesday.
American doctors operated to repair a displaced nasal fracture on the Raptors' leading scorer.
Bosh was expected to remain in hospital Wednesday and it is unknown when he will return to Canada or whether he will play again this season.
With five games left in the season, the Raptors have a one-game lead over Chicago for the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Bosh suffered the injury in the opening minutes of Tuesday's 113-111 loss to Cleveland.
Bosh was cutting across the foul lane when he was hit by Jamison's flailing left arm. Bosh fell to the floor as blood streamed from his face.
Toronto is 5-5 without Bosh this season.
